Overview
Chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT), encoded by a bacterial drug-resistance gene, inactivates chloramphenicol by acetylating the drug at one or both of its two hydroxyl groups. This gene is not found in eukaryotes, and therefore eukaryotic cells contain no background of CAT activity.
